Former National Democratic Congress(NDC) Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo has been elected Speaker of Parliament with 138 votes to defeat Aaron Mike Ocquaye of the New Patriotic Party who had 136 votes with one spoilt ballot.
In a rather funny split, Member of Parliament-Elect for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson who was spotted in Parliament despite a Cape Coast High Court granting an injunction against his swearing-in was allowed to vote.
The NPP’s mood in parliament has been sober and sad with some of them calling for a recount.
Before the votes, the NDC described its nominee for the Speakership position, Alban Bagbin as the most suitable individual to head the legislative body in the next Parliament.
The Yapei/Kusawgu MP, John Jinapor touted the achievement of Mr Bagbin who can lead an almost hung parliament.
“… the most experienced Parliamentarian in Africa in my opinion is Alban Bagbin. And I can tell you on authority that he has my vote.
“I am unwavering about this decision not just because he is NDC but because he represents the collective people in Parliament and in Ghana so he has my vote,” he stressed.
Barely 24-hours, after the New Patriotic Party submitted Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye as the Speaker of the 8th Parliament the NDC in Parliament on Tuesday, proposed Alban Sumani Bagbin as the next Speaker of the House.
Now it is gameover as Alban Bagbin has won.
