After confirming the first case of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic in the Fanteakwa north district in the eastern region, the District Assembly as part of its measures to contain, delay and arrest the spread of the disease has closed down two big market places in the district effective today, 15th April 2020.
The District Chief Executive, DCE, of Fanteakwa north, Hon. Charles Oware Tweneboah in an interview with Obido Nana Gyasi of Radio1News, said since the confirmed patient is a trader and uses Begoro market and Ahomam market frequently, DISEC together with the district’s health emergency team have decided on closing down these two markets for the next two weeks.
According to Hon. Tweneboah, they are taking keen measures to arrest the virus and prevent it from spreading so contact tracing has began where 58 people including 13 health personnel have been quarantined.
“DISEC met with the district health emergency team on Monday and we have decided to close down Begoro market and Ahomam market. These are the two big markets we have in the district. We have no option now since the man in question trades in these two markets and he might probably be infected while doing market. We have also gone to his community and all those he got in contact with him including those who came to visit him at the hospital have been self isolated. So far 58 people, including the health personnel are in self isolation” – Hon. Tweneboah revealed.
However, the DCE said they had even mounted three barriers for about 3 weeks ago to check on social distancing in all vehicles to and from the district. They have also been on massive public education after distributing veronica buckets, hand sanitisers and other essentials needed to combat the disease to the citizenry.
As the district is awaiting the results of the 58 he urged the residents of Fanteakwa north to as a matter of urgency enhance their hygiene protocols and observe the directives given by the president and the ministry of health and also pleaded with all and sundry to spread calm for the patient is doing well.
A 65 year old man who trades in Mango has confirmed positive to Covid-19 in the Fanteakwa north district even as he has no history of travelling abroad but only boom plainer of pneumonia and tuberculosis.
Eastern region currently has recorded 41 cases and 636 in Ghana as a whole with 8 death and 17 recoveries.
