The Minority in Parliament is asking the Auditor-General to investigate the account of the First Lady of the country, MS. Rebecca Akufo-Addo following her decision to refund all allowances paid her since 2017.
Deputy Majority Leader James Klutse Averdzi noted that there questions the First Lady must answer.
He said the First Lady should tell Ghanaians whether she did not spend the money given to her as allowance and kept it in her account for the period.
He posited that if the answer is yes, she did not need the money, and so why did she take the money in the first place.
In the view of the Minority, she should also refund the interest the money would have accrued over the period aside from the total amount she refunded.
The Auditor-General he suggested must go into the account of the First Lady to ascertain that the money she refunded is the money she received.
And to also compute the interest that money would have accrued if put into an interest-bearing account.
The Minority further wants the Auditor-General should also ascertain if there is enough money in the account so that the cheque she issued for the refund does not bounce.
Mr. Averdzi asserted that if the First Lady is refunding the money, it means she is not interested in state funds and for that matter, all state funds she received on behalf of her NGO should be audited and all t5hose monies refunded to the state.
The Majority responding to the issues raised agreed with the call for audit of the account of the First Lady but added it should start from former First Lady Lordina Mahama.
The MP for Nhyiaso Mr. Stephen Amoah believes the Minority is just being mischievous.
He said the Majority would also do everything possible to ensure that the account of Lordina Mahama is audited.
