Asamoah Gyan finally opens up about Dede Ayew being made captain ahead of 2019 AFCON

Asamoah Gyan has finally opened up about the Black Stars captain arm band which was given to Andre Dede Ayew.

According to Gyan, he would have rejected the captaincy role ahead of the 2019 African of Nations (AFCON) if he were Ayew.

In an interview with Accra-based Joy FM, Gyan stressed that the issues surrounding the captaincy did not affect the team’s display at the AFCON.

He went on to indicate that Dede should have turned down the decision to make him team captain.

“He’s a good guy. He had no choice but to accept it. I don’t blame him but if I were him, I wouldn’t have.”

However, many people have spoken of double standards as Gyan was first made Black Stars captain after John Mensah was relegated to general captain.

However, Gyan rejected this, indication that unlike him, Mensah was not in the squad, adding that he would have rejected the offer had Mensah been selected.

He insisted that he questioned whether John Mensah and Michael Essien had been informed of the decision before he accepted the captaincy.

He maintained that even though he did not often hang out with Andre, they were not rivals in any way.

He added that sometimes they laughed off reports of tension between them.

Kwesi Appiah took the armband from Gyan prior to the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

Gyan felt hurt as he announced his international retirement just few days to start the competition.

After President Akufo-Addo’s intervention, Gyan rescinded his decisionand was named in the Black Stars’ 23-man squad.

At the tournament the team failed to end the team’s 37 year trophy after losing their round of 16 game to Tunisia.
