Afia Schwarzenegger, a Ghanaian socialite and actress, has made a controversial remark on her verified Instagram account, stating that “any idiot can go to court.”
This incendiary post comes after business mogul and Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, launched a defamation suit against her.
GhanaWeb reported on Thursday, June 9, 2022, that the lawmaker has filed a defamation suit against the comedienne.
Chairman Wontumi, the plaintiff, is seeking damages of two million Ghana Cedis (GH2M), expenses, including legal fees, and a perpetual injunction prohibiting the defendant and his associates from publishing any defamatory materials against him, as well as any other order the court deems appropriate.
According to the plaintiff’s statement of claim, Afia Schwarzenegger damaged his name on social media on June 4, 2022.
The plaintiff is requesting that the court order the defendant to retract the defamatory statements and issue an unqualified apology.
Although Afia Schwarzenegger’s Instagram post “anyone stupid may go to court” was not a direct response to Chairman Wontumi, a careful analysis of the chain of events leads many to assume that the post was aimed at the outspoken politician.
He explained that the fact that NPP will go to court is inconsequential because “any idiot can go to court in a democracy but the onus lies with the judge to determine whether the case has merit”.
