All sporting activities to be held behind closed doors, GPL’s 25% stadium capacity scrapped

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced all sporting events will be held behind closed doors.

The ministry in a communique said the directive is in line with rising cases of COVID-19 in the past three weeks, especially, in Accra and Kumasi.

It added that the Ghana Premier League, which will begin this weekend will also be affected.

Initially, it was announced by the President Nana Akufo-Addo that 25% of spectators will be allowed at the stadia in his announcement to lift the ban on football activities when the competitions start.

The Special Advisor on health at the Presidency, Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare told Ashh FM the decision was taken for prevention sake and pleaded with clubs and supporters to adhere to protocols.

”Initially, the cases were going down and we all were happy but for about three weeks now the cases have been increasing especially Accra and Kumasi, that’s what influenced the decision.

”The matches will be shown on TV, so the supporters will have a feel of the games.

”I will plead with all supporters and clubs to accord with us and monitor the situation for some time and they should remember that we are doing this for prevention sake.”
