Some communities within Afigya Kwabre South District leaving around the buffer zone of the various quarry catchment areas are asked to relocate in other to avoid quarry spillage tragedies.
Recently they have been series of complaints from residents about the activities of some quarry companies who had invaded their communities and mining their abundant cliff.
The blasting tremor pose a serious threat to these inhabitants settle around the buffer zones of the various quarry sites.
Due to the residents stress ,the District Chief Executive Hon. Adu- Poku Christian has had an engagement with nine 9 quarry Companies who are currently operating, has come out with consensus memorandum of understanding to set up Quarry Development Fund to relocate those people within 500 metres buffer zone, and part of the fund will be use to development the various quarry communities in the district who had suffered tremendously with the activities of these quarry companies without rendering a single project to set as part of their cooperate social responsibilities for the benefit of the district.
He revealed that , these quarry companies pay’s only GH¢ 5,000 annually for business operating permit to assembly, which unacceptable ,therefore the assembly is going to charge GH¢ 5.00 per cubic of quarry stones to the market, to help the assembly gain more revenue to support the district Internal Generation Fund.
He added that ,these residents whom properties will be affected shall be valued by the assembly ,and a package of Compensation will be awarded to them to relocate ,to avoid any tragedy.
He disclosed that, portion of the MoU instruct the companies to minimize the quantum of chemicals use for blasting to help reduce unusual disturbances experience by inhabitants.
Hon. Adu – Poku Christian also called on Mineral Commission to supervise and regulate these quarry companies frequently to abide with the mining Act and punish those who violate the Act.
He made this statement to the media ,when he visited some churches at Buoho last Sunday ,7th April, 2019 to unveiled the assembly 2019 Action Plan to congregation.
