The youth of Kwabre East District in the Ashanti region have expressed their frustration
on the economic hardship in the country of which they claim is the cause of their current
dependence on lotto staking and sports betting in order to survive with their children.
According to the youth, this economic hardship is the reason some of them are into selling of
“hard drugs ” including marijuana (wee), cocaine and other drugs just to feed their family and
children because there are no jobs in the country. Speaking to the youth, one of them disclosed that
his shop has collapsed due to the high cost of goods and services and even there is no money in
the system. He said, “my brother look, this system is hard and we have nothing to do than to stake
lotto and other things in order to get money because even graduates don’t get jobs after
college how much more me”? “As you see us here it’s nothing more other than gambling for survival”.
In his statement, he said, “Look, brother, I don’t want to do politics here but I don’t know whether we
here but I don’t know whether we voted for sleepless beings as leaders or whatever, we don’t see any good
policies been implemented to help reduce unemployment rate in the country at all. I’m NPP but my party
propagated lies to Ghanaians for change and now where are our one district one factory, one district one
warehouse?” He disclosed that “I even campaigned for NPP especially the one constituency one million
US dollars. I suggest we give the country back to our colonial masters to Govern us than
our corrupt unproductive leaders”. However, Responding to the question as to whether he thinks that
one can solve the unemployment situation in the country by giving it back to the colonial masters he said yes,
and added that that’s his candid opinion because he doesn’t think any leader in Ghana being it NDC or NPP
can help the country. Moreover, the unwise actions and inactions by sleeping leaders are very annoying
because some of them can draw good policies to help the country but he or she wants to be given position first
and even to do that they don’t have a listening ear.
