5-hours downpour renders Tamale, Sagnerigu residents homeless

Monday morning heavy rains rendered homeless many residents of some communities in Tamale Metropolis and Sagnerigu Municipality of the Northern Region.

The five-hour rain submerged many homes, shops and stores.

Gas and fuel stations in the Vittin community were also flooded.

Some of the affected residents took to their heels in order to escape being carried away by the rampaging flood water.

It took the officials of Ghana National Fire Service a hard time to rescue some victims who were trapped in their houses.

Goats and other domestic animals were carried away by the floods.

Mr Mohammed Iddirisu, one of the victims, told the Ghanaian Times that all rooms in their house were inundated.

He said the foodstuff, money, electric gadgets and other personal belongings had  been destroyed by the water.

Another victim, Fati Asuma, told the Ghanaian Times that everything in her house got soaked.

According to her, the water was at waist level as they struggled to carry the small children on their shoulders for the entire five hour period the rain lasted.

Madam Asumasaid four bags of  maize that her husband  had brought home  two days earlier got soaked.

She added that children’s computers and school books were destroyed by the floods.

Mr. Musah Yahaya, another resident, said it was time the city authorities pulled down structures standing in waterways in order to halt the frequent flooding.

The Northern Regional Fire Service Commander, James Ankrah, who took his personnel to rescue the residents who were trapped in their homes, appealed for a lasting solution to the recurrence of the flooding in the area.

He stated that the flood situation in some parts of the region was worrisome and that something urgent needed to be done about it.

The regional fire service commander advised the residents to desist from building in waterlogged areas.

The hard-hit communities included Kalaraga, Fou, Vittin, Gomani and Sawaba.
