2 jailed Over Police Recruitment Scam

Two persons have been dragged before an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding two individuals under the pretence of getting them enlisted in the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

Bernard Kwesi Amanor-Wayo, 47, Administrative Help, and Emmanuel Sackey, 55, Mason, are alleged to have collected a total of GH¢6,000 from two unsuspecting victims but failed to deliver on their promises.

One other suspect who was only identified as Ofori who is said to be an accomplice of the two is on the run.

The two are facing three counts of conspiracy and defrauding by false pretences.

They all pleaded not guilty to the charges and the court, presided over by Her Honour Jane Akweley Qauye, remanded them in custody to re-appear on September 16, 2019.

According to the facts of the case as presented by DSP George Amega, the police, acting on intelligence, arrested Bernard Kwesi Amanor-Wayo and Emmanuel Sackey at Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra on August 23, 2019.

He said the two had collected GH¢3,000 each from two victims – Irene Kuma Nokolawe and Narteh Jah Nissi – under the guise of assisting them to be enlisted in the GPS.

The prosecutor told the court that Bernard Kwesi Amanor-Wayo, in the course of investigations, told the police that one Ofori was an accomplice in the recruitment scam.

DSP Amega stated that documents suspected to be forged police enlistment forms and a cash sum of GH¢1206.20 were retrieved from the accused persons.

He added that efforts were being made to arrest the said Ofori to assist the police in investigations.
