The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is not expecting any significant thing from President John Mahama at today’s [Thursday] State of the Nation Address, when he presents the State of the Nation address to Parliament.

According to the party, President Mahama and other Presidents have turned the all-important exercise into a platform for making lofty campaign promises.

The address over the years, has served as a platform for the leaders of the nation to announce their major policy interventions and programmes towards accelerated development.

But in recent times, the NPP says President Mahama has used the occasion to announce his party’s campaign promises.

Speaking to Citi News, the Communications Director of the party, Nana Akomea, said President Mahama among other things, is expected to tell the nation whether he was able to fulfill the promises he made to Ghanaians last year.

“The state of the nation address has become all sorts of things. Like the title suggests, you are supposed to give a snapshot of the country at that particular time; the state of our railways, public transport, education and so on; but the various presidents have turned the state of the nation into a mixture of promises, campaign speeches and so on.”

He noted that, “Last year [2015], President Mahama came and gave all sorts of promises. I don’t know if he will be able to report on Thursday about how successful he has been in fulfilling those promises. We are going to look into the promises he made last year, and check out if he was able to succeed,” he added.
