Organized Labour Demo Begins…

Organised Labour is set to hold its mammoth nationwide demonstration today.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), Industrial and Commercial-Workers Union (ICU) and other labour groups are agitating against recent hikes in utility and fuel prices as well as imposition of the energy sector levy.

The cost of petroleum products have gone up between 18 and 27 percent following the passage of the levy by Parliament. Water and electricity tariffs have also shot up by 67.2% and 59.25% respectively.

The workers are demanding that government reverses those increases and spare Ghanaians the agony of a high cost of living.

In Accra, the demonstration will start from Obra Spot near Nkrumah Circle at 7:30am and end at Black Stars Square.

The routes for the demonstration in the regional capitals would be announced by leaders of the Union in the various regions.

Today’s demonstration will be followed by a nationwide strike, beginning tomorrow; barring any last minute changes according to the Secretary General of the TUC.
