Former President Jerry John Rawlings has added his voice to calls for a credible election in November.

He insists that a fair election will lead to a stable country.

The former President was addressing delegates of the National Democratic Party at the Trade Fair centre in Accra when he made the call.

He said it is important for us to remember that if we adopt a process that is fraudulent and unfair, whatever victory you think you will win will only lead to an unstable situation.”

The former President said “we can only have a stable victory, a stable country and secure if we ensure that the election is free and fair.”

Demand for new register

There have been raging demands for a new voters register by pro-opposition groups who believe that, such move will make the election credible.

The New Patriotic Party had argued that the current electoral row is bloated with about 80,000 names of foreigners and minors and had put pressure on the EC to compile a new one for the polls.

But the Electoral Commission had turned down the demands and has agreed to audit the register instead.

Demo won’t make election credible

President Mahama had said demonstrations and pressure on the Electoral Commission won’t make the upcoming polls credible.

“Opportunities have been created for political parties and other organizations to participate in ensuring the integrity of our elections. The Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) is a forum for political parties to participate in making suggestions to the Electoral Commission.

“Let us use this vehicle to cooperate with the Electoral Commission and make our suggestions known. Demonstrations against the commission will not enhance the process of our elections in any way,” President Mahama added.
